Assassin's Creed® Odyssey

Winner
VS
Assassin's Creed Shadows against Odyssey comes down four categories to two in Odyssey's favor, and our players agree: 4.53 out of 5 from 100,310 ratings against 4.38 from 29,000. Odyssey is the larger game, it branches into different endings, and PS Plus Extra already covers it while Shadows is full price on a PS5. Shadows takes the two categories that matter most to anyone who walked away when the series went RPG: stealth that finally works the way the name promises, and the best looking world Ubisoft has built. Choose on which of those you came for.

Verdict

Odyssey takes it four categories to two, and our own review data leans the same way: 4.53 out of 5 across 100,310 ratings against 4.38 from 29,000, both filed as mixed. It is the bigger world, the one that branches into different endings, and the one PS Plus Extra already covers, while Shadows is full price on a PS5 alone. Shadows wins stealth and it wins on looks, and if those are the two things the RPG trilogy took away from you, that is a real answer rather than a consolation prize.

  • Play Assassin’s Creed Shadows if you came back for stealth that actually works, you own a PS5, and you want the best looking world Ubisoft has built.
  • Play Assassin's Creed® Odyssey if you want the bigger game and the branching endings, you are still on a PS4, or PS Plus Extra already covers it.

What Shadows dropped from the Odyssey template

Assassin's Creed Shadows is the first RPG era entry that subtracts more than it adds, and the subtractions are the whole reason this comparison exists. Gone is the naval layer, the conquest battles, the mythical bosses and the roaming mercenary hunters, all of which Odyssey built its open world around. Gone too is the ability sprawl: posters on the Shadows Steam board count three skills where Odyssey handed out full trees, and our catalogue logs no skill trees, leveling or loot system for Shadows at all.

What arrives instead is focus. Two protagonists who genuinely play differently rather than one hero who does everything, a light and shadow detection model that makes stealth a system again, and four seasons that rewrite the map four times over a campaign.

Neither game needs the other. They sit two thousand years and one continent apart and share no cast.

  • Start with Odyssey if you want the larger game, the branching endings, or the one PS Plus Extra already covers.
  • Start with Shadows if stealth is what you came back for and a PS5 is what you own.
  • Play both in release order only if you want to watch the series argue with itself about what it wanted to be.

World and exploration: Assassin's Creed® Odyssey

Odyssey, and the gap is measurable. Game Rant puts Odyssey's Greece at 130 square kilometers, the largest map in the series, against 84 for Shadows, which lands fourth. A fair amount of Odyssey's total is open water, so this is not purely an argument about walking distance, but the water is content rather than loading screen: naval battles, island hopping and boarding actions are things Shadows simply does not have. A massive open world with stunning visuals is the first item in Odyssey's stored player praise, and our catalogue files it under Action, Adventure and Role Playing Games where Shadows is an RPG alone. Shadows answers with four rotating seasons that change how NPCs behave and how the map plays, which is the smarter single idea. Odyssey still has more in it.

Combat and gameplay: Assassin’s Creed Shadows

Shadows, on stealth rather than on depth, and the split is worth stating precisely. Engaging stealth and combat mechanics is the first thing our stored player praise says about Shadows, and the top comment on the r/assasinscreed thread for this exact question concedes it in the same breath as preferring Odyssey overall: stealth in Shadows is a lot of fun, with good tools and satisfying animations. Naoe and Yasuke are two genuinely different characters rather than one hero with two loadouts. Odyssey's counterargument is depth, and it is a strong one. Posters on the Shadows Steam board count three abilities against Odyssey's full trees, and our catalogue logs skill trees, leveling, a loot system and customization for Odyssey and none of them for Shadows. If you want builds, skip to replayability. If you want to leave a castle without anyone knowing you entered, this is the category.

Story and characters: Assassin's Creed® Odyssey

Odyssey, and this is the least close category on the page. Poor narrative pacing and a lack of a coherent story is the first complaint in Shadows' stored player sentiment, and repetitive missions and objectives that detract from immersion is another. Odyssey's corresponding entry is praise: an intriguing storyline with historical characters. The structural difference is logged in our catalogue too. Odyssey carries branching narrative, choice based dialogue and multiple endings; Shadows carries dialogue and multiple endings without the branching underneath. Kassandra and Alexios are the same script with different delivery, but that script keeps asking you to decide things, including which members of your own family survive it. Shadows tells a dual revenge story it keeps interrupting to hand you another castle. If the campaign is why you are choosing, choose Odyssey.

Visuals and performance: Assassin’s Creed Shadows

Shadows, and it is not close either. Stunning graphics and beautiful environments leads its stored player praise, and the seasonal system is the concrete reason why. Spring, summer, autumn and winter rotate through the campaign, changing light, foliage, weather and what the world does around you, where Game Rant notes that Origins, Odyssey and Valhalla all held a single fixed look for the whole run. Seven years and a console generation separate the two: Odyssey is a PS4 title in our availability data and Shadows is PS5 only. The performance half is a draw rather than a Shadows win. Technical issues such as optimization and bugs sit in the Shadows complaint list, and technical issues including long load times sit in Odyssey's. Neither is clean. Only one of them is beautiful.

Length and value: Assassin's Creed® Odyssey

Odyssey, on three counts a subscriber feels immediately. It is included with PS Plus Extra in our availability data and Shadows is on no tier, so one of the two costs a subscriber nothing and the other costs full price. It carries a Metacritic of 85 where our catalogue holds no critic score for Shadows at all. And it runs on a PS4, plus PC, Xbox One and Switch, where Shadows is PS5 only. One honest caveat about the at a glance table above: the two length figures come from different measures, an IGDB main story estimate for Shadows and a median recorded playtime for Odyssey, so read that row as a rough guide and not as a ranking. On map size, the figure that is genuinely comparable, Odyssey is half again as large.

Replayability and builds: Assassin's Creed® Odyssey

Odyssey, and the mechanics list does most of the arguing. Our catalogue logs branching narrative, choice based dialogue, skill trees, leveling, a loot system and customization for Odyssey, and logs none of those six for Shadows. That is the difference between finishing a story and running a different character through it. Engaging RPG mechanics and character progression is stored player praise for Odyssey, and so is diverse gameplay options and combat styles. Its roaming mercenary system also gave the open world a reason to keep generating problems, and posters on the Shadows Steam board confirm that system did not carry over, with the Guardians that replace it mostly appearing after an alarm inside a castle. Shadows has desirable replay value with long gameplay hours in its own praise list. Odyssey has more reasons to spend them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Assassin's Creed Shadows better than Odyssey?
Odyssey, on four categories to two. It takes world and exploration, story and characters, length and value, and replayability; Shadows takes combat and gameplay on the strength of its stealth, and visuals and performance. Our players rate Odyssey at 4.53 out of 5 from 100,310 ratings against 4.38 from 29,000 for Shadows, with both filed as mixed sentiment.
Does Assassin's Creed Shadows play like Odyssey?
Only partly. Both are third person open world RPGs from Ubisoft Quebec with parkour, dialogue choices and multiple endings, but Shadows drops the naval layer, the conquest battles, the mythical bosses and the roaming mercenary system that Odyssey built its map around. Posters on the Shadows Steam board count three abilities where Odyssey had full skill trees, and our catalogue logs skill trees, leveling, a loot system and customization for Odyssey and none of them for Shadows.
Is Assassin's Creed Odyssey bigger than Shadows?
Yes, by about half again. Game Rant measures Odyssey's Greece at 130 square kilometers, the largest map in the series, against 84 square kilometers for Shadows, which ranks fourth. A good share of Odyssey's total is open water, but that water carries naval combat, island hopping and boarding actions rather than empty travel time.
Should you play Assassin's Creed Odyssey before Shadows?
No, neither one needs the other. They are set about two thousand years apart, in Ancient Greece and feudal Japan, and share no cast, so nothing is spoiled in either direction. Play Odyssey first if you want the bigger game or if PS Plus Extra already covers it, and Shadows first if stealth is what brought you back to the series.
Is Assassin's Creed Shadows on PS Plus?
No. Shadows is on no PS Plus tier in our availability data, while Odyssey is included with PS Plus Extra. If you already subscribe, that settles the value question by itself: one of the two costs you nothing and the other costs full price. Shadows is also PS5 only, where Odyssey still runs on a PS4.
Does Assassin's Creed Shadows have naval combat?
No. Ship combat is one of the systems Shadows left behind, and it is the single largest thing Odyssey has that Shadows does not. Fun naval combat and exploration opportunities sits in Odyssey's stored player praise, and the Shadows Steam board is explicit that neither the ships nor the mercenary system carried over.
