Best Musou Games for PS5 & PS4

Dynasty Warriors: Origins is the best musou game on PS5 and PS4 right now, with Warriors Orochi 4 Ultimate the pick for roster size and Persona 5 Strikers the pick for story. Those three lead 15 one-against-thousands games here, every one of them sold on the PlayStation Store, so the Switch-only Hyrule Warriors and Fire Emblem Warriors that pad most rankings are out. I ranked them on what players actually say about each game, not on critic scores or on how many officers the box promises.

DYNASTY WARRIORS: ORIGINS

4.4(12,000)2025
ESRB Teenhistorical
GoodReview analysis

Overall, player feedback for "Dynasty Warriors: Origins" is largely positive, with many praising its engaging gameplay, improved battle mechanics, and rich storytelling reminiscent of the franchise's earlier titles. However, some players expressed concerns about the lack of playable characters and repetitive content, alongside technical issues like crashes.

Why it's here: My top pick, and the one I would start with: Origins strips Dynasty Warriors back to a single nameless hero and makes the thousand-soldier battlefield feel tactical again, with weapon proficiencies that grow as you fight rather than a roster to grind through. The recurring complaint in Steam reviews is exactly that trade, one playable character where the series used to hand you dozens. Rated Teen, 4.42 from 12,000 players, the newest game here and PS5 only. If you have never played a musou, this is the entry to buy.

WARRIORS OROCHI 4 Ultimate

4.6(3,600)2020
ESRB Teen
MixedReview analysis

Overall, player feedback for "WARRIORS OROCHI 4 Ultimate" presents a dichotomy, with a notable divide between those who appreciate the expansive character roster and engaging gameplay, and those criticizing the repetitive mechanics, story shortcomings, and concerns about character balance. While many fans enjoyed the gameplay and nostalgic elements, significant complaints about the grinding nature and lack of innovation compared to previous installments were frequently cited.

Why it's here: The biggest roster on this list, and that is the whole pitch: a crossover cast pulled from Dynasty Warriors, Samurai Warriors and the Orochi mythology, each fighter carrying a deity magic kit on top of the usual combo strings. Steam reviews split on it, with the grind to level that many characters the complaint that keeps surfacing, so this is the pick for someone who treats a roster as a checklist to clear rather than a menu to sample. Rated Teen, 4.56 from 3,600 players, with two-player split-screen. Buy it for breadth, not for story.

Persona®5 Strikers

4.5(8,700)2020
ESRB Mature 17+
GoodReview analysis

Overall, player feedback for Persona 5 Strikers is largely positive, with many praising the fun gameplay, engaging story, and the enjoyable combination of characters from the Persona franchise. However, there are notable criticisms regarding technical issues and a preference for the traditional turn-based combat of the original game.

Why it's here: The story pick: Strikers is a direct sequel to Persona 5, so the Phantom Thieves road trip across Japan carries real narrative weight instead of the thin framing most musou ship with, and swapping Personas mid-fight keeps the crowd-clearing from going flat. The caveat Steam reviewers raise most is that the real-time combat never lands as cleanly as the turn-based original, so come for the writing first. Rated Mature, 4.45 from 8,700 players. If you finished Persona 5, this is the one game on this list you should not skip.

ONE PIECE: PIRATE WARRIORS 4

4.7(13,731)2020
Co-op: 4ESRB Teenpirate
GoodReview analysis

Players overwhelmingly endorse "ONE PIECE: PIRATE WARRIORS 4" for its engaging gameplay, large character roster, and strong representation of the One Piece anime. However, criticisms regarding repetitive gameplay, a lack of story depth, and technical issues adversely affect the experience for some users.

Why it's here: The co-op pick, and the licensed musou I would hand to a group: four players online or two on one couch, aerial combat, destructible terrain, and a Straw Hat roster where each Devil Fruit changes how a stage actually clears. The condensed story mode is the recurring Steam complaint, with whole arcs skipped outright, so this is not the entry to learn One Piece from. Rated Teen, 4.66 from nearly 14,000 players. For a weekend with friends who already know the crew, start here.

5DRAGON QUEST HEROES: The World Tree's Woe and the Blight Below
ESRB Teenfantasy

Why it's here: The one for RPG players who want their musou wrapped in a proper party: Dragon Quest Heroes swaps the war map for the kingdom of Arba, where you switch between four heroes mid-fight, cast spells and hold choke points against waves of monsters that used to be neighbours. No store review corpus is stored for it yet, so I am going on the catalogue record alone, and that record makes it the most-rated game on this list. Rated Teen, 4.62 from nearly 16,000 players. If Three Kingdoms history leaves you cold, this is the softer entry.

6DRAGON QUEST HEROES II
ESRB Teen
MixedReview analysis

Player feedback on Dragon Quest Heroes II is notably divided, with a significant number of players praising its engaging combat, nostalgic elements, and enjoyable gameplay mechanics. However, many players express frustration with performance issues, including severe optimization problems and bugs that hinder enjoyment. Overall, the sentiment reflects a mixture of admiration and disappointment, leading to a polarized reception.

Why it's here: The sequel opens the map up: Heroes II trades the first game's hub-and-mission layout for connected fields you roam between battles, and adds four-player online co-op with a wider cast. It is also the entry Steam reviewers are most divided on, with performance problems and progress-blocking bugs dominating the negative half, which matters if you are choosing between this and the original. Rated Teen, 4.44 from 3,000 players. Play the first Heroes before this one unless co-op is the point.

GreatReview analysis

Overall, player feedback for Fate/Samurai Remnant is overwhelmingly positive, particularly among fans of the Fate franchise. Although there are some criticisms regarding gameplay mechanics and pacing, the engaging story and character depth garnered strong appreciation. Players recommend the game to both newcomers and veterans of the Fate series, noting its enjoyable combat and storytelling elements.

Why it's here: The best writing on this list after Strikers: a Holy Grail War in Edo-period Japan, with you switching between the ronin Iori and his Saber servant mid-fight while a dense visual-novel story runs between battles. Steam reviewers rate it highly, and the caveat they keep returning to is a slow early power curve with repetitive encounters before the build opens up. Rated Teen, on PS Plus Extra, 4.35 from 4,400 players, so it costs nothing to test on the subscription. For Fate fans it is an easy yes; for everyone else, the story carries it.

SAMURAI WARRIORS: Spirit of Sanada

4.7(841)2017
ESRB Teen
GoodReview analysis

Player feedback for Samurai Warriors: Spirit of Sanada is predominantly positive, with many praising its engaging story, character development, and improved gameplay mechanics. However, a significant portion of reviews also highlights performance issues and criticism of the game's optimization.

Why it's here: A single-clan musou, and the best story Samurai Warriors has told: Spirit of Sanada follows Yukimura Sanada across his whole life, adds explorable castle towns between battles and strings missions into multi-stage battles instead of one-off maps. The complaint Steam reviewers raise most is optimisation, with frame drops in the busiest fights. Rated Teen, 4.69 from around 840 players, the second-highest rating here but from the smallest group. If you want a musou that reads like a historical drama rather than a roster, this is the one.

9BERSERK and the Band of the Hawk
ESRB Mature
GoodReview analysis

Overall player feedback leans heavily toward praise for the game, particularly among Berserk fans. Many reviews highlight the fun, cathartic combat of the musou genre and the faithful representation of the Berserk story. However, there are notable criticisms about repetitive gameplay and technical issues, particularly with keyboard and mouse controls.

Why it's here: The darkest game on this list and the heaviest hitter: Guts' sword cuts enemies in half rather than knocking them over, and the story walks the Golden Age arc into the Hawk of the Millennium arc with the anime's voice cast. Steam reviewers single out the faithful adaptation, with the recurring reservation that the roster is small by musou standards and some missions turn into a grind. Rated Mature, 4.59 from 3,600 players. For a Berserk reader this is close to essential; for anyone else, it is the most cathartic combat here.

Best twist on the formula

Attack on Titan 2

4.5(9,100)2018
Co-op: 4ESRB Mature
GreatReview analysis

Overall, player feedback for Attack on Titan 2 is overwhelmingly positive, with many praising the fun gameplay mechanics, character customization, and the engaging integration into the Attack on Titan story. However, some players have noted issues with bugs and repetitive gameplay elements. Many players recommend the game highly, especially for fans of the anime and those looking for unique combat mechanics.

Why it's here: The furthest this list drifts from the formula, and the most distinct game on it: ODM gear replaces the ground combo, so every fight is a swing toward a Titan's nape rather than a sweep through infantry, with a created character threaded through seasons one to three. Steam reviewers rate it highly and name the repetitive mission structure and bugs as the trade-off. Rated Mature, 4.49 from 9,100 players, with four-player online co-op. If you have bounced off traditional musou before, try this one first.

11DYNASTY WARRIORS 8: Xtreme Legends Complete Edition
ESRB Teenhistorical
GoodReview analysis

Overall, players have expressed overwhelmingly positive feedback for "DYNASTY WARRIORS 8: Xtreme Legends Complete Edition," praising its engaging combat and nostalgic value. However, there are notable criticisms related to the PC port's performance and controller compatibility issues.

Why it's here: The classic pick, and the most content per pound on this list: the full Three Kingdoms story, hypothetical what-if battles, a Lu Bu story route, Ambition and Challenge modes, and two-player split-screen throughout. Nearly all of the Steam criticism targets the PC port's controller support and optimisation, a caveat that reads as port-specific rather than about the game underneath. Rated Teen, 4.49 from 11,000 players. If Origins' single hero feels too narrow, this is where the series' breadth lives.

SAMURAI WARRIORS 5

MixedReview analysis

Players generally appreciate the fresh art style and engaging gameplay of Samurai Warriors 5, with many considering it a solid addition to the franchise. However, there are significant criticisms regarding the smaller character roster and the use of shared movesets, which some feel detracts from the game's individuality.

Why it's here: The subscription pick: Samurai Warriors 5 is on PS Plus Extra, so it is the musou on this list you can try without buying anything. It reboots the series with an ink-brush art style and a tight Nobunaga and Mitsuhide story, and the caveat Steam reviewers raise most is the smaller roster with movesets shared between officers. Rated Teen, on PS Plus Extra, 4.12 from 2,900 players, the lowest rating here. Play it on the subscription for the look and the story; buy Orochi 4 if you want the roster.

13ONE PIECE: PIRATE WARRIORS 3
Co-op: 2ESRB Teenpirate
MixedReview analysis

The overall player feedback for ONE PIECE: PIRATE WARRIORS 3 is highly polarized, with many players praising the game's engaging gameplay and nostalgia for the One Piece franchise, while an overwhelming number criticize the technical flaws of the PC port, including severe bugs, poor controller support, and frequent crashes. The common sentiment indicates a divide, where fans of the series might enjoy the game despite its issues, but new players are frequently discouraged by these problems.

Why it's here: The entry that tells One Piece properly: Pirate Warriors 3 runs the manga from Romance Dawn to Dressrosa at full length where the sequel compresses, so it is the better game to read the story through. Combat is older and ground-bound, co-op caps at two, and Steam reviews are sharply divided over the PC port's crashes and controller problems. Rated Teen, 4.70 from 14,000 players, one of the highest ratings on this list. Pick this one for the arcs and Pirate Warriors 4 for the fights.

Fate/EXTELLA LINK

ESRB Teen
GoodReview analysis

Overall, players generally enjoyed the gameplay improvements of Fate/EXTELLA LINK compared to its predecessor, praising its action mechanics and character variety. However, many expressed disappointment with the story's short length and lack of depth, highlighting that it does not live up to the storytelling standards set by earlier entries in the series. Despite these criticisms, a significant number of players recommend the game as enjoyable for fans of the Fate franchise and musou games in general.

Why it's here: The highest-rated game on this list, and the fastest: EXTELLA LINK moves at a sprint, with 26 Servants, Noble Phantasm finishers and 4-on-4 online battles bolted onto the usual sector-capture maps. Steam reviewers like the combat and consistently call the story short and thin, so treat it as the arcade musou here rather than the narrative one. Rated Teen, 4.73 from 1,500 players. If you want the cleanest combat on the list and already know the Fate cast, this is the pick.

WARRIORS ALL-STARS

4.2(1,300)2017
ESRB Teen

Why it's here: Koei Tecmo's crossover for its own catalogue: 30 heroes drawn from across the publisher's series, open scenarios and multiple endings that shift with which battles you take, plus a Musou Rush mode for clearing crowds at speed. No review corpus is stored for it yet, so I am going on the catalogue record alone, and with the second-smallest rating pool here it reads as a fan curio rather than a safe buy. Rated Teen, 4.21 from 1,300 players. For Koei Tecmo completionists first, everyone else after Orochi 4.

About Musou games

Musou is the name for the Warriors formula Omega Force built around Dynasty Warriors: one officer against a battlefield of hundreds, with objectives to hold and an enemy officer to put down at the end of each stage. The curation rule is simple: a game had to run that loop and have a PS5 or PS4 release, which admits Koei Tecmo's own Dynasty, Samurai and Orochi lines plus the licensed collaborations built on the same engine, from One Piece and Dragon Quest to Berserk, Fate and Attack on Titan. For 13 of the 15 games here, we read and summarized player reviews from Steam into what players consistently praise and consistently complain about; Dragon Quest Heroes and Warriors All-Stars have no stored review corpus yet, so their entries rest on the catalogue record alone. The one buying decision is roster versus story: Orochi 4 and Dynasty Warriors 8 give you dozens of officers to level, while Origins, Strikers and Spirit of Sanada give you one protagonist and a plot worth finishing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best musou game on PS5?
Dynasty Warriors: Origins. It is the newest game on this list and the only one built for PS5 first, it rebuilds the Three Kingdoms battlefield around a single nameless hero whose weapon proficiencies grow as you fight, and the one recurring complaint in Steam reviews is that single playable character. Warriors Orochi 4 Ultimate is the pick instead if you want the widest roster, and Persona 5 Strikers if story matters more than scale.
Which musou games have local co-op on PS4 and PS5?
Warriors Orochi 4 Ultimate, Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends Complete Edition, Samurai Warriors 5 and both One Piece: Pirate Warriors games support two-player split-screen. Online, Pirate Warriors 4 goes to four players and Orochi 4 to six. Attack on Titan 2 and Dragon Quest Heroes II are online co-op only, both for four players. Origins, Strikers, Spirit of Sanada, Berserk, the first Dragon Quest Heroes, Fate/Samurai Remnant and Warriors All-Stars are single-player.
Is Persona 5 Strikers a musou game?
Yes. Strikers runs the musou crowd-combat loop with Persona swapping layered on top, and it is a direct sequel to Persona 5 that takes the Phantom Thieves on a road trip across Japan. The caveat Steam reviewers raise most is that the real-time fights never land as cleanly as the original's turn-based battles, so it is the story pick on this list rather than the combat pick.
Can I play One Piece: Pirate Warriors without knowing One Piece?
You can, but Steam reviewers consistently say Pirate Warriors 4 appeals far less to players who do not know the anime, and its story mode skips whole arcs. Pirate Warriors 3 walks the manga from Romance Dawn to Dressrosa at full length, so it is the better entry for learning the story, while Pirate Warriors 4 has the better combat, aerial fights and four-player online co-op.
Are any musou games on PS Plus?
Yes. Samurai Warriors 5 and Fate/Samurai Remnant are both on PS Plus Extra, so subscribers can try two very different musou games without buying anything: Samurai Warriors 5 for a classic officer roster in an ink-brush art style, and Fate/Samurai Remnant for an Edo-period Holy Grail War with a dense visual-novel story between battles.
Which musou game should a beginner start with?
Dynasty Warriors: Origins, because it hands you one hero and teaches the battlefield gradually instead of dropping a roster of dozens on you. If you already follow One Piece, Pirate Warriors 4 is the easier first step, and if traditional musou has never clicked, Attack on Titan 2 swaps the ground combo for ODM-gear aerial fights and is the most distinct game on this list.
