Built as a spin-off from the Jak and Daxter platformers, Jak X swaps free-running for the driver's seat: weaponised karts, dark-eco power-ups and a grim Kras City framing where the heroes race a poison antidote out of a dying crime lord. The structure is a story-driven championship of cups, with combat-racing modes that range from straight races to drone-clearing death matches, closer in spirit to Twisted Metal and Crash Team Racing than to the series it came from.
Critics received it warmly on release for its speed, presentation and online play, while flagging floaty handling and uneven difficulty. The sharper divide was among Jak loyalists, some of whom never wanted the platformer to become a racer at all. That tension still defines it: a confident combat racer with real nostalgic pull, but a PS2-era one, now reachable only through PS Plus Premium emulation. It suits combat-racing fans and series devotees more than newcomers chasing modern kart racing.
