About This Game

Darkest Dungeon recasts the dungeon crawl as a war of attrition against morale. Red Hook Studios builds every run around an Affliction system: torchlight, hunger, and the sight of a comrade falling all feed a stress meter that, when it breaks, turns capable heroes paranoid, abusive, or fatally reckless. Wayne June's sardonic narration tracks the descent, and permadeath means a favored fighter lost to one bad turn is gone for good.

Critics landed around the mid-80s, praising the gothic art, the voice work, and combat that rewards positioning and party composition over reflexes. The fault line is the randomness. Defenders read its crits and missed heals as the honest texture of a stat-heavy RPG; detractors call a campaign undone by a single roll cruel rather than challenging. As a roguelike it sits at the punishing end: the right pick for players who want loss to mean something, a grind for anyone hoping to brute-force it.
