About Indie sci-fi games
Indie on this list means small-studio origin, not small scope: a solo developer (Lethal Company), a two-person team (SIGNALIS) and a studio you could fit in one room (Dyson Sphere Program) sit beside two-person veterans Subset Games. The picks span roguelike strategy, factory automation, colony survival, classic horror and a bartending visual novel, because indie sci-fi is a spread of genres rather than one. Community favorites Elite Dangerous and Space Engineers are excluded as larger-studio productions, and No Man's Sky, which outgrew the indie label years ago, leads our space games list instead. For every game here, we read and summarized player reviews from Steam, since that is where PC players actually write them, into what players consistently praise and consistently complain about. Seven picks also hold PlayStation star ratings; four are PC territory.
