Resident Evil 4 Remake vs Original: Which Is Better?

Resident Evil 4
Winner
resident evil 4 (2005)
Verdict
Start with the 2023 remake. Game-Scout's own ratings make that closer than it sounds, because the 2005 original holds 4.76 out of 5 from 48,356 players against 4.74 from 144,667 for the remake, and the gap is not about quality. The remake rebuilt the three things that aged worst, the controls, the escort work and the quick-time events, and it is the longer, slower, more searchable version of the same story. The original is still the faster one, and the one that gets replayed.
- Play Resident Evil 4 if this is your first walk into the village, or you want the version where the knife, the parry and Ashley behave the way a modern game would.
- Play resident evil 4 (2005) if you know the campaign by heart and want the eleven hour version, with Assignment Ada, Separate Ways and Mercenaries unlocked in the box.

What the remake rebuilt, and the one boss it left behind
The changes worth knowing before you choose are mechanical rather than narrative, and they point the same way: fewer button prompts, more decisions.
- The knife became a system. It carries durability, wears down when you parry or execute with it, and is repaired at the merchant. Knives found in the world hold less and cannot be repaired.
- The parry replaced the prompts. A timed knife parry cancels an incoming melee attack outright, and that is what most of the original's quick-time events turned into.
- Ashley stopped being a health bar. Capcom removed hers so she would read as a companion rather than a second life to manage.
- U-3 did not make it. The original's most divisive boss is gone, kept only as a file describing one of Salazar's bodyguards.
None of it changes who Leon is looking for or how the story ends. It changes how much of the game asks you to react and how much asks you to choose.
Which version to start with in 2026
Release order is the wrong instinct here. The remake tells the same story from the same beginning and assumes nothing, so Resident Evil 4 works as a complete first experience.
- New to the series: the remake, then the original if the campaign stays with you. The other way round turns its rebuilt encounters into things you check against a memory rather than meet.
- Coming back after years away: resident evil 4 (2005), in the 1080p PlayStation 4 re-release. It is the faster run, and it surprises people who expect it to feel broken.
- Playing both: remake first. The original then reads as a lean, confident game rather than the version missing things.
The one case for going backwards is nostalgia you already have. If you quoted the merchant before you read this page, start where you left off.
World and exploration: Resident Evil 4

The remake, and the busiest Reddit thread comparing the two settles it in one line: the remake has far more puzzles and optional backtracking, and the original had a severe lack of them. That matches what Game-Scout stores for each game. The 2023 record lists puzzle-solving, stealth and resource management among its mechanics, while the 2005 record leans on hidden secrets and collectibles. The difference on the ground is what the village is for. In the original it is a corridor you fight your way along, brilliantly paced and almost never worth turning around in. In the remake it is a place you search, with merchant requests, locked rooms and optional detours the original had no room for. Slower, and considerably more of a horror game for it.
Combat and gameplay: Resident Evil 4

The remake takes this one cleanly, and a GameFAQs board comparing the two puts it plainly: the remake is superior in gameplay mechanics and controls, though it would not exist without the original. The rebuild is structural. Leon can move and shoot, the knife now carries durability and can be repaired at the merchant, and a well timed parry with it turns an incoming melee swing into nothing at all, which is what replaced most of the button prompts. One Steam discussion of the changes calls losing the quick-time events the single biggest win for the remake. The original's own stored complaints agree from the other side, naming dated controls in its top five. The trade is that the knife is now a resource you can run out of.
Story and characters: Resident Evil 4

The remake, on the cast rather than the plot, since the plot is the same rescue in both. Ashley is the change that matters. Capcom removed her health bar so she would read as a companion rather than a second life to babysit, and Game-Scout's stored complaints for the 2005 version name her among its five recurring frustrations, so a real problem was being fixed. Character development and storyline tweaks sit in the remake's stored praise, a line the older record does not carry. The honest loss is there too: the remake's complaints include narrative changes that stray too far, and the original's praise leads on iconic characters and memorable dialogue. Is a better written Ashley worth a quieter Salazar? For a first playthrough, yes.
Difficulty: Draw

A draw, because they are hard in different directions. Steam threads on exactly this question report the remake as the tougher game overall, with enemies that flank and rush to answer the extra movement Leon was given, and a Professional mode that leaves very little room on a mistimed parry. The same threads also point out the trap in the comparison. Much of the original's reputation for being easy comes from players who memorized its enemy placements twenty years ago, and the remake simply is not memorized yet. Game-Scout's stored complaints for the remake include fights that read as artificially difficult rather than genuinely hard, which is the fair criticism of it. Neither is punishing on Normal. Only one of them can still surprise you.
Length and value: Resident Evil 4

The remake, on hours, and the numbers answer the question people actually ask. Game-Scout's stored completion times put a normal run of the remake at roughly 19 and a half hours against about 12 and a half for the original, and a full clear at about 43 hours against 27. That is a longer game by a third, not a rounding difference. The counterweight is what each one charges for Ada. Separate Ways arrived for the remake as a paid add-on in September 2023, while later versions of the original bundle both Assignment Ada and Separate Ways with no extra purchase, and microtransactions sit near the top of the remake's stored complaints. More game, with more of it sold separately.
Replayability and builds: resident evil 4 (2005)

The original, narrowly, and the argument for it is speed. Game-Scout's stored times put a rushed run at about 11 hours against 13 for the remake, and high replay value is one of the five things stored player praise for the 2005 version names directly. A Medium piece arguing the original's corner makes the same case in different words, that it plays faster and is more replayable by design. Everything it has to unlock is already inside it: Mercenaries, Assignment Ada, Separate Ways, the bonus weapons. The remake is not short of reasons to return, with its own free Mercenaries update and challenge modes, and its stored praise names replay value too. It just takes longer every time to get back to the good part.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is the original Resident Evil 4 better than the remake?
- Game-Scout players rate it fractionally higher, 4.76 out of 5 from 48,356 ratings against 4.74 from 144,667 for the remake, and its stored praise leads on exceptional gameplay and memorable characters. The remake is still the better first playthrough, because it fixes the three things the original's own stored complaints name: dated controls, an escort that fights you, and sections that run long.
- Is the Resident Evil 4 remake the same as the original?
- Same story, rebuilt systems. Leon still goes to a European village to recover the president's daughter, and the campaign hits the same landmarks. What changed is underneath: a knife with durability you repair at the merchant, a parry in place of most quick-time events, Ashley without a health bar, more puzzles and optional backtracking, and the U-3 boss fight removed entirely.
- Which is harder, Resident Evil 4 OG or the remake?
- The remake, by most accounts in the game's Steam discussions, where players report enemies that flank and rush to counter Leon's new freedom of movement and a Professional mode with very little margin on a mistimed parry. Part of the gap is memory rather than design, since many players know the original's enemy placements by heart. Neither is punishing on Normal difficulty.
- Is the RE4 remake longer than the original?
- Yes, by roughly a third. Game-Scout's stored completion times put a normal run of the 2023 remake near 19 and a half hours against about 12 and a half for the 2005 game, and a full clear at roughly 43 hours against 27. Even a rushed run is longer, about 13 hours against 11.
- Should I play the original Resident Evil 4 before the remake?
- No. The remake retells the story from the beginning and assumes no prior knowledge, so it works as a complete first experience. Playing the original first mainly turns the remake into a comparison exercise. Save it for afterwards, where its speed and its dialogue land as their own thing rather than as a rough draft.
- Is Separate Ways included in the Resident Evil 4 remake?
- Not in the base game. Ada's Separate Ways campaign arrived for the remake as a paid add-on in September 2023, alongside a free Mercenaries update. Later versions of the 2005 original bundle both Assignment Ada and Separate Ways with no extra purchase, which is one of the few content arguments the older game wins outright.
