Reception tends to hand the story crown to Red Dead Redemption 2, which shipped to more than 175 Game of the Year awards and is widely held as one of the finest narratives in the medium. If a self-contained, character-driven story matters most, the western is the pick.

GTA Online is the reason GTA 5 stayed a fixture for over a decade, a constantly updated multiplayer economy of heists, races, businesses and social spaces for up to 30 players, still receiving content years after launch. Red Dead Online supports up to 32 players and offers posses, bounties, hunting and moonshining across the same frontier, but Rockstar wound down major updates for it, and the recurring complaint in player feedback is exactly that neglect.

For players who treat online as the main event, GTA 5 is not close. For players who mostly want the single-player campaign, the difference barely registers, and Red Dead Redemption 2's solo experience is the stronger of the two.

There is no wrong order, since the two share no story. The practical split comes down to what a player wants right now.

There is no single winner, only a clean split by taste. Choose GTA 5 for a fast, funny crime sandbox and the deepest online world Rockstar has built; choose Red Dead Redemption 2 for a slower, more immersive frontier and one of gaming's most acclaimed stories. Player ratings give the edge to the western, and its inclusion on PS Plus Extra makes it the easier one to try first.
