About This Game

The Supergiant release immediately before Hades, and the clearest look at the studio's ideas taking shape. You lead a band of exiles through the Downside, competing in mystical three-on-three Rites to earn their way home, all carried by hand-painted art, a Darren Korb score and branching, choice-driven storytelling. Critics were effusive, with a PS4 Metascore of 85 and near-perfect scores from IGN and Polygon.

What makes it singular is that it has essentially no fail state: lose a Rite and the narrative absorbs the defeat and continues, an idea widely credited as ahead of its time and a forerunner to Hades' own embrace of failure. The flip side, noted by critics and players, is that the low stakes can drain tension and discourage experimenting with your team. It is for the Hades fan curious about the studio's origins and drawn to story over combat loops. A PS4 title.
