Elder Scrolls Online vs Skyrim: Which Is Better?

The Elder Scrolls Online

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition
WinnerVerdict
Skyrim, for almost everyone asking. The two split the scoreboard evenly, but the categories that decide a first Elder Scrolls game, the story you steer and the combat you steer it with, both go to Skyrim, and Game-Scout's players rate it 4.74 out of 5 from 104,842 ratings against 4.30 from 80,922. The Elder Scrolls Online wins where it is not really competing with Skyrim at all: a Tamriel that runs from Morrowind to the Daedric realms, group content Skyrim has no equivalent for, and from 2026 a stream of Seasons that arrive free.
- Play The Elder Scrolls Online if you want other people in Tamriel with you, a map that covers the whole continent rather than one province, and a game that adds something between visits; you already keep a PlayStation Plus tier, which ESO needs just to launch.
- Play The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition if this is your first Elder Scrolls game, or you want a province you can dismantle in whatever order you like, offline, on a single purchase and with no second subscription in the way.

What free Seasons changed about the cost of starting ESO
Most of the advice online about whether The Elder Scrolls Online is worth the money predates the change that answers it. ZeniMax retired the annual paid Chapter for quarterly Seasons in 2026, starting with Season Zero, Dawn and Dusk, on 2 April.
- Seasons arrive free. New zones, storylines and systems reach base-game owners at no extra cost.
- Older paid content came with them. Update 49 folded Orsinium, the Thieves Guild, the Dark Brotherhood and Imperial City into the base game.
- ESO Plus is still optional. The subscription buys convenience and a crafting bag, not the current story.
- PlayStation Plus is not optional. Bethesda's support page is explicit that any tier is required to play ESO at all, and Extra or Premium members need not buy it separately.
None of that makes ESO the better game, and the categories above still land where they land. It does retire the money argument people used to lead with.
Starting order, and why it matters less than the threads suggest
The r/ElderScrolls answer to whether Skyrim should come first is that these games are self-contained, so nothing is spoiled either way. True of the plots. Not quite true of the habits.
- Coming to ESO from Skyrim is where the friction shows up, and the threads say why: approach it the way you approach Skyrim and you make it harder on yourself. Loot is not scattered for you, quests expect reading rather than a marker, and the ability bar wants building on purpose.
- Coming to Skyrim from ESO costs nothing. The silence even helps: after a shared world, a province where every NPC is yours to talk to or rob reads as the stranger of the two.
- If a friend already plays The Elder Scrolls Online, start there and treat the order question as settled.
Order only decides something for a first Elder Scrolls game with nobody waiting on you, and there the r/ElderScrolls consensus on new players is Skyrim.
World and exploration: The Elder Scrolls Online

The Elder Scrolls Online, on ground covered, and the neatest proof is that Skyrim is inside it. The Greymoor chapter added Western Skyrim to ESO in June 2020, the Blackreach caverns underneath it, and a Solitude standing roughly a thousand years before the one Bethesda shipped. Past that the map runs from the mushroom forests of Morrowind to the realms of Oblivion, and the line that keeps recurring in the r/ElderScrolls threads comparing the two is that ESO's world is simply bigger and more varied. The catch is real, and IGN's own comparison names it: exploration is toned back, you will not be killing an NPC on a whim, and a Daedric weapon is not going to be lying in a cave for you, because a shared world cannot let it. More places to stand, fewer liberties to take in them.
Combat and gameplay: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition

Skyrim, and the GameFAQs board asking this exact question does not hedge about it: Skyrim, and it is not close, with ESO's combat called clunky in the same breath. The structural difference is what a fight asks of you. Skyrim puts a weapon or a spell in each hand, lets you block, shout, and pause the world to drink a potion. ESO hands you an MMO ability bar with a light-attack weave underneath it that takes weeks to sit right. Threads on r/skyrim make the fair counterpoint that ESO's controller mapping is easier to reach mid-fight. Neither is a modern action showcase, and Game-Scout's own record for Skyrim calls its combat stiff beside newer action RPGs. It is still the more Elder Scrolls of the two.
Story and characters: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition

Skyrim takes this on agency rather than word count. IGN's comparison is blunt about what a shared world costs you: multiple dialogue choices are rare, and the freedom of the single-player games is not there. That is most of the argument. Skyrim lets you shelve Alduin indefinitely for a mage's college or a thieves' guild, and the prophecy waits for as long as you want it to. ESO's stored player praise leads on extensive lore and storytelling, and that is fair: a decade of zone questlines is a lot of writing, and the storytelling is the thing its own players name first. Volume is not the same thing as a story you can push around, though, and the GameFAQs verdict that Skyrim has the better story is where most solo players land.
Co-op and multiplayer: The Elder Scrolls Online

The Elder Scrolls Online, uncontested, because Skyrim does not turn up. Game-Scout's catalogue lists Skyrim Special Edition as single player and nothing else, with no co-op entry and no multiplayer entry against it. ESO carries all four modes: single player, multiplayer, co-operative and massively multiplayer online, with four-player group content and up to 99 players sharing an instance. On the ground that means dungeons you queue for, twelve-player Trials, and the three-alliance PvP campaigns in Cyrodiil, none of which Skyrim has an answer to on a PlayStation. If the reason you are reading this is that a friend wants to play Tamriel with you, this category is the whole decision and the other six are commentary.
Visuals and performance: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition

Skyrim, and on PS5 it is a clean technical win rather than a matter of taste. The November 2021 next-generation update runs it at native 4K and 60 frames per second in a single mode, so nothing is being traded. ESO's Console Enhanced release, free to every player since June 2021, makes you choose instead: Fidelity at native 4K and 30 frames, or Performance at 1440p and 60. Both games carry technical complaints in Game-Scout's stored review data, and they are different complaints. Skyrim's are bugs, plus disappointment from PlayStation players specifically at how a decade-old engine holds up. ESO's are crashes and download sizes, which sit in the top five things its players gripe about.
Length and value: The Elder Scrolls Online

The Elder Scrolls Online, and this is the category that moved most recently. ZeniMax has taken ESO off paid Chapters and onto free quarterly Seasons for 2026, starting with Season Zero, Dawn and Dusk, from 2 April, and Update 49 in March folded formerly paid content including Orsinium, the Thieves Guild, the Dark Brotherhood and Imperial City into the base game at no charge. The ESO Plus subscription stays optional on top of that. Skyrim is a single purchase that stopped growing in 2021, with its Anniversary content sold as an upgrade over the Special Edition. The offset is not small: ESO needs an active PlayStation Plus tier just to launch, where Skyrim runs offline forever once it is yours.
Replayability and builds: Draw

A draw, because they replay in opposite directions. Skyrim's stored player praise names high replayability and freedom of gameplay outright, next to a strong modding community, though that last one is largely a PC advantage: PlayStation gets Creations, not the Nexus catalogue. ESO's praise names varied character customization and progression, and its structure is why. Any class can carry any weapon, skill lines level by use rather than by pick, and the Champion Point system keeps opening long after the story stops. What settles it is what a second run means to you. A new build in a world you already know by heart is Skyrim. A world that has added something since you last logged in is ESO.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Which is better, Skyrim or The Elder Scrolls Online?
- Skyrim, for most players, and Game-Scout's own ratings agree: 4.74 out of 5 from 104,842 players against 4.30 from 80,922 for The Elder Scrolls Online. Skyrim wins on the two things people buy an Elder Scrolls game for, a story you can push around and combat you drive yourself. ESO wins on scale, on group play Skyrim has no answer to, and since 2026 on cost, because its Seasons arrive free.
- Is The Elder Scrolls Online anything like Skyrim?
- It shares the world and the skill trees, not the freedom. IGN's own comparison puts it plainly: exploration is toned back, multiple dialogue choices are rare, and you cannot kill an NPC on a whim or find a Daedric weapon lying in a cave, because a shared world will not allow it. Combat is the biggest departure, an MMO ability bar rather than a weapon in each hand. Greymoor did add Western Skyrim and Blackreach to ESO in 2020, so the province itself is in there.
- Do I need PlayStation Plus to play The Elder Scrolls Online?
- Yes. Bethesda's support page states that an internet connection and any version of a PlayStation Plus membership are required to play The Elder Scrolls Online on PS4 and PS5. ESO Plus, the game's own subscription, is a separate and optional purchase. If you hold PS Plus Extra or Premium you do not need to buy ESO at all, since it sits in that catalogue. Skyrim needs no subscription to play, and is also included on PS Plus Extra.
- How long before Skyrim is The Elder Scrolls Online set?
- Roughly a thousand years. The PlayStation Store listing for ESO puts its story nearly 1,000 years before the events of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, during the Second Era, while Skyrim is set two centuries after Oblivion in the Fourth Era. The overlap is geographic rather than chronological: Greymoor let ESO players walk Western Skyrim and a much older Solitude, centuries before the Dragonborn arrives there.
- Should I play Skyrim before The Elder Scrolls Online?
- You do not have to. The r/ElderScrolls answer is that the games are self-contained, so no order spoils anything. Skyrim is still the gentler first Elder Scrolls game, and going the other way is where players report friction: approach ESO the way you approach Skyrim and you fight it, because loot is not scattered for you and quests expect reading rather than a marker. If a friend is already in ESO, start there instead.
- Is The Elder Scrolls Online worth starting in 2026?
- More than at any earlier point on cost. ZeniMax replaced paid Chapters with free quarterly Seasons for 2026, and Update 49 folded formerly paid content including Orsinium, the Thieves Guild, the Dark Brotherhood and Imperial City into the base game. The complaints its players still name in Game-Scout's stored review data have not gone away: clunky combat, large downloads and crashes. Start with Skyrim if you are playing alone, and with ESO if you are not.
